“Ashfield is located in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The population was estimated to be around 12,000 in 2006. The suburb is governed by Ashfield Municipal Council.
The first inhabitants of the area were the Cadigal people, who belonged to the Dharug language group. Ashfield was first settled by Europeans in 1793 and was named after Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney (1733-1800), who was British Home Secretary at the time. The first land grant in the area was made to Rev. Richard Johnson in 1794.
